The Shelby GT350's were meant for racing. Notice the large intake under the normal grill opening. This was added at the Shelby factory.
According to the sign, this car had served some time
as a Hertz rental car in the mid-60's. All the Hertz
rentals were painted black with two large gold
stripes running down the center of the car. I can
remember seeing the ads in Car and Driver.
Wouldn't you just love to rent a car like this today?
This particular car placed 4th at the 24 hours of LeMans in 1967. It was driven by the late Mark Donohue and late Bruce McLaren (designer and driver of the successful Can-am McLaren cars of the mid to late 1960's). At some point, the car must have been modified as pictures I have of the car at the 1967 LeMans race show it without the 'bump' over the drivers position which was added for very tall drivers like Dan Gurney.
The MKIV was a refined version of the 'J' car which had
poor aerodynamics.
This MKIV debuted and was the winner of the Sebring
12 hour race
in 1967. It was driven by Mario Andretti and the late
Bruce McLaren. The was the only race Mario Andretti
participated in with Shelby - all his other races
were for Holman & Moody (only a short time earlier
in the year, Andretti had won the NASCAR Daytona 500
in a Holman & Moody prepared Ford Fairlane).
This was the winner of the 1966 24 hours of LeMans. It was driven to a disputed first place finish by the late Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon. Although their car crossed the finished line first, the second second place MKII, driven by the late Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby were under the impression that they were a lap ahead and had won the race. The Miles/Ruby car began to go down victory lane but were turned back by the French race officials.
Sadly, Ken Miles, whom had contributed so much to
the success of Shelby racing, died testing the
'J' car a few weeks after LeMans.
The very first Shelby Cobra produced. Imagine the
value of this car!
